![]() ![]() The visual interfaces offer an approach that encourages experimentation. They are based on physics and natural forces such as magnetism and gravity. These devices, created in collaboration with Dillon Bastan, are superb for generating soundscapes. What follows is a selection of useful Max for Live devices and packages worth exploring, all of which are either included with Ableton Live Suite 11 or freely available as an additional download. There are numerous free packages that can be downloaded from the Ableton site, and there’s an active community of developers that offer free or modestly priced bundles. The telltale is the Max device icon mentioned earlier. ![]() You have probably already used Max for Live devices without even knowing it, since Ableton places devices such as the Note Echo under the MIDI Effects section of the browser as opposed to the Max for Live section. There is an enormous variety of devices that come with Ableton Live Suite including simple utilitarian plugins, sophisticated virtual instruments, audio effects processors and MIDI effects. The good news is these things are ready to go as-is. Cycling ’74 offers many tutorials and they are plentiful on YouTube as well for the curious. Of course, as with anything this powerful, there is a learning curve to Max programming, but nothing as complex as learning text-based arcane code. The latter is preferred so you don’t overwrite the original in a fit of zealous, newly found empowerment. Alternatively, copy it all over to a new custom device to alter as you see fit. Now you can edit to your heart’s content and significantly change the functionality of the device. Once opened you have to unfreeze the device using the third button on the bottom of the window as seen below:įinally, to see the guts of the device, click the first and fifth buttons to unlock the patch and enter patching mode: You will also see the same Max for Live Icon next to the name in the browser: Click that button to open the device in Max/MSP. If you see an edit button icon like the one below in the title bar of the device, that indicates it is a Max for Live device that can be opened, edited or copied to your own custom device. ![]() What makes them unique is that you can open the hood of these devices and actually edit the functionality or interface to meet your own devious needs. You do not have to be a Max programmer to enjoy Max for Live devices - they are instantiated like any other plugin. This is unfortunate because not experimenting with these incredibly powerful plugins is akin to driving a Ferrari and never leaving first gear. Having taught courses for Ableton Live and music production in general for several years, I am continually surprised by the apparent hesitancy some Ableton users seem to have regarding Max for Live devices. The standalone version of Max is still enjoying robust support, and the integration of Ableton and Max for Live devices is flourishing. I am happy to report that has not been the case. Being a longtime Max user and based on past experience with mergers in general, I was concerned that Cycling ’74 would take a backseat and stop pushing the envelope as they had successfully done for over 20 years. Back in 2017, I wrote an article about the merging of Ableton and Cycling ’74, the company behind the graphic object programming language known as Max/MSP and its visual counterpart, Jitter.

If you’re using aberrometers in your clinic, what is your preferred choice of aberrometry in your clinic? Zywave, WASCA, iTrace, Nidek OPD Scan, or any other aberrometer, or you’re not having any other experience with aberrometry? Let’s wait for the answer. Other studies have stated aberrometers based on the ray tracing principle and aberrometers based on the Hartmann-Shack principle should not be interchanged in clinical applications. And they found that higher order measurements, higher order aberration measurements obtained with iTrace tended to be larger than those obtained with Shack-Hartmann aberrometers and significant differences between the devices were found in coma measurements also. Rozema did a wonderful comparison of six aberrometers, and they found that all these aberrometers have different technical specifications, but when studied in normal healthy eyes they found that most of the parameters globally were similar, but there were some parameters in which there were significant differences. iTrace is based on the principle of ray tracing. The commercially available aberrometers, which are widely used worldwide, are Nidek OPD scan, WASCA, by Carl Zeiss Meditec, Zywave by Bausch and Lomb, multispot Hartmann, and Allegretto wave analyzer. The Zernike coefficients are represented as these Zernike polynomials, and the value is expressed in microns, and these values are expressed as bars, and these are displayed in iTrace. So the first two rows include lower order aberration, vertical tilt and horizontal tilt are included in first order aberration, oblique astigmatism, defocused and vertical astigmatism are included in second order aberration, while the bottom rows of this Zernike pyramid includes higher order aberration, vertical trefoil, horizontal coma, and oblique coma are included in third order, and vertical pentafoil, vertical secondary trefoil are included in fifth order aberrations. So how do we quantify wavefront aberrations? These wavefront aberrations are represented by Zernike mode pyramid, where m is the angular meridional frequency and n is the radial order. Do you have any aberrometer in your hospital? So it will be good to teach those people who are not having so much exposure to aberrometers. Higher order aberration causes blur and double voicing, glare and halo caused by spherical aberration, and starburst aberrations are caused by trefoil. Lower order consist of myopia and astigmatism. Aberrations are mainly lower order aberrations and higher order aberrations. And any departure from this parameter leads to a wavefront error. So what is wavefront aberration? It’s a measure of aberropia, the light coming from the distance, and whenever this passes through a convex lens, a spherical wavefront is formed. In the process of image formation by the human eye, the sources of degradation are diffraction, scattering, and most common is optical aberration. And ray tracing wavefront aberrometry and corneal topography fulfill this requisite. So today we are in the era of supranormal vision, where not only the surgeon, but patients also want vision beyond 20/20, and one can tailor patients’ outcomes with advanced different technology. So we’ll have a short talk on the basics of wavefront aberrometry and screening of patients with multifocal IOL candidates, dysfunction lens syndrome, dissatisfied refractive and multifocal patients, precision in toric IOLs, and other non-surgical applications of iTrace. What color schemes work best in Kansas waters? This bait is great for any water conditions, also. This bait is very effective in dirty water because of the sounds and vibration it gives off. The bait has a blade on the jig that moves and vibrates through the water. This is a moving bait that vibrates when retrieved. When I’m looking for a reaction strike, I will throw the chatterbait. They seem to want a more active bait when the fishing is good, but when the fishing is slow and bites occur every so often, that’s when I do the slower retrieves. You know, if the fishing is active, I will give my bait a more active look. Do you change your approach much based on conditions? This retrieve is just extremely effective. He showed me that retrieve, and now it’s one of my favorite ways to throw a bait. ![]() I learned how to throw this retrieve by him. This retrieve is one legend Ned Kehde loves to throw. My third retrieve is the “drag n’ shake.” This “drag n’ shake” gives the bait a hopping presentation in the water. The bait looks like a crawfish resting on a rock - talk about a fish frenzy. The “dead stick” can fire up a school of smallmouth. The TRD got its nickname “the do-nothin’ bait” simply for this reason. The second one is “dead stick” - this simply means do nothing. This makes the TRD look like a roaming crawfish, and fish just go crazy. My favorite way to throw them is “drag n’ stick,” “dead stick” and “drag n’ shake.” The “drag n’ stick” is simply dragging your bait back and pausing so often. Heinen: You know, there are variety of different ways to throw these ElaZtech plastics. How do you work those products to produce the best bite? I throw most of their plastics quite frequently, but these are my main fish catchers. These baits are the ones I throw more often. So far, my favorite baits by Z-Man are the Finesse TRD, ZinkerZ, Finesse ShadZ and ChatterbaitZ. I throw many of their products at different times. Heinen: This question is kinda tough, only because I throw so many. What are your favorite Z-man products to use? But not on the ElaZtech plastics, these plastics are just insanely good. Other baits, you know, can catch one to five fish per bait, if lucky. I know some people catch 100-plus per bait before they have to get a new one. Their baits can catch 50 to 75 fish and still be usable. The baits I have thrown for several years now are just improving daily. Heinen: Simple, their baits are just better. If you found this article useful, consider taking a look at our full article on logical operators. But when working with more advanced conditional formulas - in particular, SUMIF and COUNTIF - you'll likely bump into scenarios in which only "" is sufficient (for example, if you want to sum up sales for all offices for which the office name is not "New York"). When you're using IF statements, you can swap around the order of arguments and generally use either "=" or "" in your formulas. ![]() Is there any advantage to using the "" operator instead of the equals sign? Definitely. Note that the above formula could be rewritten as follows, using the equals operator (=) but switching the order of the IF statement's value_if_true and value_if_false arguments: = IF( B3= "New York", "Headquarters", "Local office") Note that this formula outputs "Local office" for all the offices names that do not equal "New York" but, it outputs "Headquarters" when it sees that the office name is equal to "New York". To do so, we could use the following formula: = IF( B3 "New York", "Local office", "Headquarters") A SnackWorld manager wants to add a column to the spreadsheet that dynamically outputs whether a given office is the company headquarters or a local office. The company's headquarters is in New York, and all of the other offices are local. The spreadsheet above shows a list of SnackWorld's office locations around the country. If you haven't used IF statements yet, check out our IF statement tutorial first. ![]() The following example uses the IF function. Hint: For the last example above, you'll have to read up on how the RIGHT function works if you don't already know it! Output: FALSE = RIGHT( "Boston, MA", 2) "MA" Can you tell why the following formulas output the given results? = "Boston" "San Francisco" Of course, "" doesn't have to be used on numbers. This formula outputs FALSE, because 45 is equal to 45. Let's take a look at another simple example using integers: = 45 45 The above formula outputs TRUE, because 6 does not equal 8. Let's take a look at the "does not equal" operator in action to see how we can use it in a simple formula: = 6 8 This is the exact opposite functionality of the equals sign (=), which will output TRUE if the values on either side of it are equal and FALSE if they are not. If they are not equal, it will output TRUE, and if they are equal, it will output FALSE. Whenever Excel sees this symbol in your formulas, it will assess whether the two statements on opposite sides of these brackets are equal to one another.
